First created in the early 1960's, R.D. is the outcome of research developed by the House of Bollinger on the ageing of champagne on its lees. Not only does the wine retain its freshness but, through the extra contact with the lees, develops more complexity and subtlety. Remaining for a minimum of eight years on its lees, the R.D. acquires a greater aromatic complexity and length. On the other hand, the recent disgorging - the date of disgorging is inscribed on the back label - gives the wine an exceptional freshness. Characteristics of the 1988 harvest: The 1988 vintage was of very good quality. Nothing altered the natural development of the vine, except for a rainy late season which allowed grey rot to develop in some crus of Pinot Noir. The flowering happened between 16th and 21st June. A rigorous sorting out of the grapes allowed Bollinger to bring in grapes in good condition. The yields reached 9,000 kg per hectare and the average alcohol of the musts was 9.2° with a very good acidity. Grapes only come from the grands crus and premiers crus from Champagne The House estate covers two third of Bollinger's needs in grapes which guarantees the consistency and quality of its wines. 17 crus entered in the composition of the R.D. 1988 blend, with 66% grands crus and 34% premiers crus. These were mainly from Aÿ, Verzenay, Louvois, Mesnil s/Oger, Oger and Cuis. R.D. 1988 is matured in Bollinger's cellars for a minimum of eight years under cork closure. This ageing helps the aromas to develop fully and is done under a cork stopper ensuring, over four years, a better barrier again oxidisation than a crown-cap. This method, unusual in Champagne, helps the aromas to keep their bouquet and neatness. The recent disgorging - the date of disgorging is inscribed on the back label - guarantees its exceptional freshness.

Mature and nutty in character, this 1988 exhibits a firm texture and an elegant stature, a fine backdrop for the roast coffee, hazelnut and citrus flavors. Dry style. Drink now through 2003. 10,000 cases imported.

This mature wine opens with rich apple and caramel aromas. The bead is excellent, the mouthfeel still taut and bracingly dry, showing the high acidity seen in many 1988s. Displays bitter-citrus, herb and apple-skin flavors and a long lemon and spice finish with a burnt matchstick element. Tasters noted the dichotomy between the seductive, ripe nose and lean palate. This may need even more time.
